Ladysmith church ladies make sleeping bags for the homeless

The Ladysmith Gazette has partnered with the Liefde in Aksie group and is providing the newspapers free of charge

A group of ladies from different churches around town have formed a Bible Study group called Liefde In Aksie. These dynamic, caring women are now making sleeping bags out of newspaper for homeless people.

The group gets together every Thursday morning under a tree in Pretorius Road.

They use 140 newspapers per sleeping bag, sticking them all together with masking tape and then using adhesive plastic to form the final product that can be comfortably slept in. Another ‘plastic bag’ is put over the first one, before rolling up the sleeping bag, ready to give to a recipient.

The group say they saw a need in the community and started the project, which they call ‘God Bless Sleeping Bags’, about a month ago.

Group member Elmarie Booysen says their aim is to help the poor, and keep the homeless warm and comfortable at night. These ladies are to be commended for this wonderful initiative!

The Ladysmith Gazette has partnered with them and is providing the newspapers free of charge.
