Warning: Biliary on the rise in Ladysmith

1 tick can kill your pets, so protect them from this deadly disease

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) urges all pet owners to be aware that biliary (commonly known as tick bite fever) is on the rise in Ladysmith, so your dogs are in danger.

Biliary is a serious tick-borne disease that is potentially fatal, especially when left untreated. It affects the red blood cells of dogs.

Symptoms include:

  • Extreme fatigue and lethargy
  • Loss of appetite (and as a result, rapid weight loss)
  • Pale gums and inner eyelids
  • Very dark or red urine
  • Fever. If you notice that your pets have any of these symptoms, please take them to the vet immediately.

The AACL urges all pet owners to use shampoos for ticks and fleas, or tablets from the vet.

Remember that one tick can kill your pet!
