The grace of an Angel unites a community

"She treated us like we were the only people in the world! How amazing..."

Do you believe angels walk among us?

According to local resident, Letichia van der Merwe, they do… and she has identified banking sales consultant, Angel Mdluli as one of them. Letichia described Angel as ‘Newcastle’s very own sweetheart’ with a radiant smile and gorgeous personality.

In a social media post which went locally viral last week, Letichia’s intention was to thank Angel for exceptional service.

“I never imagined one post on Facebook would receive such a remarkable reaction from Newcastle!” exclaimed Letichia. “The reason I put up the post up on Facebook was to tell the community that service delivery in town is not bad as everyone makes it out to be. I wanted everyone to know who Angel is, and for her to be recognised for her good work. She is truly amazing in every possible way, and is a prime example of how we should treat our fellow residents.”

Angel’s dynamic personality shines through in her work environment, where the bubbly consultant sat down with the Newcastle Advertiser to talk about her unexpected fame and her life journey.

“I started my career in the banking industry in early 2007 and worked in customer services,” she said.

She quickly built her way up to being one of the top recognised sales consultants in the country: “Once I began my journey at work, I asked myself how was I going to do this. Through determination and working on my social skills, I succeeded and it led me to where I am today.”

Despite the pressure and stress of working in a financial institution, Angel believes a positive attitude makes all the difference.

“I believe you have to wake up every day, ready to face any obstacle which may stand in your way, and while you’re at it smile! Make a difference by being kind.”

Angel’s path to a positive attitude has not always been easy. Growing up, she was quiet and reserved.

“I was definitely not extroverted; I kept to myself and did not socialise as much as I do today. Once I left the Free State, where I was raised, I found it extremely difficult to adjust due to the language barrier. I could not speak Zulu… I can now speak more than eight of our beautiful country’s languages fluently,” she said proudly.

Angel embraces the simple notion of honesty being the best policy as the best way to approach life.

“Dealing with a lot of different individuals in your workplace daily requires a lot of honesty and being yourself. I believe you have to treat others the way you would like to be treated, and I personally invest my time into every person I come across,” she said. Letichia is testament to this.

“My family and I were so comfortable. Angel made us feel right at home and really connected with us, and the process to resolve my query was handled in a very professional and friendly manner. She treated us like we were the only people in the world! How amazing…”

Angel believes acts of kindness and generosity often lead to bigger and better things: “My advice to anyone would be to realise the ‘how’ and its importance. How we respond to others, how to work on yourself and how to be sensitive and considerate with these tools we can build a wonderful society,” concluded Angel.
