Water supply disrupted in Newcastle East

"We call upon the community to exercise calm, while teams are out to fix the problem"

The Newcastle Municipality has issued a statement to residents, regarding the current water interruptions in Newcastle East (Madadeni and Osizweni).

Newcastle East was without water since yesterday (February 9) and residents have been vocal in expressing their frustrations.

The municipality’s statement read as follows:

“Water supply has been disrupted in Osizweni and Madadeni since yesterday, due to a burst pipe at the Braakfontein Reservoir. In the interim, water tankers have been dispatched to the affected areas to assist residents. The municipality is racing against the clock in order to resolve the issue as soon as possible. The unit working on burst pipe has indicated that the problem could be fixed before 6pm today.”

Head of Communications at the municipality, Mlungisi Khumalo said teams have been dispersed to the affected area:

“As we speak, we have a team working on fixing the burst valve, due to excessive water pressure. It’s a matter of time until everything goes back to normality. We want to make something clear though, there is no such thing as ‘water-shedding’. There was just an interruption in water supply. We have never had ‘water-shedding’. We do however, understand the community’s frustrations and we ask for patience while the problem is being fixed.”

The municipality has apologised for the inconvenience caused.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
