Friends fondly remember Comrades Marathon pioneer Betty Cavanagh

Betty Cavanagh is remembered by the fellow running mates

Eric Walton, a former member of the EAC: “The Estcourt running community is saddened to hear of the passing of dear Betty Cavanagh. Betty played a pivotal role at the Estcourt Running Club. She will always be remembered for her enthusiasm and willingness to give of her time. Every Tuesday she did the time-keeping at the time-trials and always motivated runners and walkers to achieve their goals, especially new lady runners. Betty was a very quiet, humble person and was a pioneer of Woman’s Road Running in KwaZulu-Natal, if not South Africa, as a whole. I will always remember our long conversations after time trials and at races. Betty was indeed a very special lady. From my family, sincere condolences to Tony and his family on the loss of a wonderful wife and mother.

Belinda Smith, a former member of the Estcourt Athletic Club (EAC) founded by Mr and Mrs Cavanagh: “It is only because of the help and training from Betty that I could complete my first Comrades Marathon. She always offered advice and I feel honoured to have met the couple and had her mentor me. I owe many of my running success stories to Betty. Heartfelt condolences to the family and may you rest in eternal peace.”

Debbie Andrade.

Former neighbour Debbie Andrade: “We will always remember the lovely lady Betty was. I remember going over to have tea with her when she still resided in Estcourt. I wish to pass my deepest and sincere condolences to the family during this tough time.”

Jenny Taylor.

Jenny Taylor, member of the EAC: “She will be sadly missed for her enthusiasm, encouragement, sense of humour and selflessness. Betty was an incredibly talented runner and even when she herself couldn’t run, she would offer to do things like time-keeping. You will be missed by the running community you inspired and the larger community.”
