Racers ‘chase the sun’ at Oval Track

"We had an amazing season in 2019, and hope 2020 becomes even better."

Residents gathered on a hot evening summer evening at the Newcastle Oval Track,  in anticipation of the first race of 2020, on February 1 . Newcastle Oval Track Committee Member, Zaakira Khan, said they were ready for the new year:

“We have been waiting patiently to begin the new year for our races, as we have had to cancel two races because of the weather. We are happy this weekend the weather played along with us.”

The Oval Track began its new 2020 season on high note:

“We have welcomed some new members in the committee, although there isn’t much of a change from last year. We had our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on January 11, and chose our committee there.”

Zaakira added they had hope the club would grow even bigger this year:

“We are looking forward to a fantastic year. We had an amazing season in 2019, and hope 2020 becomes even better. We hope to set our events on a much bigger scale, because we have learnt something new each year.”

She said the club was in talks to host a regional tournament which would see Newcastle’s economy booming:

“We will be hosting one leg of the northern region race event this year, where drivers from that area will fill Newcastle. This means our B and Bs and petrol stations will have an influx of people, who will be spending money in the town. We will know soon when all of that will take place.”

Zaakira’s tips for new riders interested in joining the Oval Track club:

1. Apply for membership with the club, and apply for a racing license with the club’s affiliation body, World of Motorsport ZA.
2. Choose a category you would like to race in.
3. Build your car according to the specs and rules set out for that respective race.
4. Safety first! You will need a fireproof racing suit, gloves and a helmet. This is mandatory gear for each driver.
5. At every race event, each car goes through a process of being scritinised before the races begin, to ensure it complies with all rules and regulations.
