Local municipality communications manager Siya Maphalala released the following statement on the matter: “Alfred Duma Local Municipality would like to inform the community that one of the municipal transformers was struck by lightning and as a result, some areas were left without electricity. Our technicians and contractors are on site working on the matter to try and resolve it for electricity to be restored.”

Residents are angry that the municipality cannot give them a time-frame, as many people are concerned about the food in their fridges going bad.

According to the Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce, the information given to them is to the effect that electricians are working on the issue in Jantha Road and hope to have power restored before the close of business today.

The power outage in parts of the CBD is due to a fault on an overhead line. Municipal workers are currently patrolling the line, but are struggling to locate the fault.
