Volunteers take clean-up campaign to the streets

The Vryheid Clean Up group on Facebook has escalated to more than 500 members.

Volunteers took to the streets on Saturday morning, to clean up the main road leading into town from Dundee.
Young and old met on the corner of Deputasie and Church Streets, where they were met by Dennis Jones and his team. Dennis first took it upon himself when he started to clean up the area leading to and surrounding the cemetery a few months ago. The Vryheid Clean Up group on Facebook has escalated to more than 500 members.
This social media platform is used to inform the community of any clean-up activities in and around the town of Vryheid. Saturday’s volunteers were issued with gloves, rakes, black bags and brooms, which were sponsored by various individuals and businesses. Jones used a high pressure water pump to remove unwanted advertisements stuck to dustbins and electrical boxes along the street. Some volunteers removed the weeds and grass on the pavement and road, and afterwards treated areas with weed killer.
Others picked up litter and swept the pavement, while some dug sand out of the water drains, to help eliminate blockages caused by water not draining properly.
The cement slabs covering the water drains were also retrieved and fitted. This community initiative continued well into the late afternoon.
Asked why she brought her three- and six-year-old children to participate in the clean-up, Buyi Zulu responded: “They must learn to clean up and take care of their environment and town, and leave it just as clean as they would their own house.”
