Dedicated cook served with long service award

As a young girl, Cynthia's only working experience was for a local contracting business.

In 1990, Sibongile resident, Cynthia Shabalala (57) joined SAVF Eventide Home as a general worker. 30 years later, she is now the head cook, whipping up delicious meals for those under her care.

As a young girl, Cynthia’s only working experience was for a local contracting business, before she joined Eventide as a young 27-year-old. She said she enjoyed cooking both at Eventide and at home.

“I have learned a lot about cooking and keeping neater spaces in a work environment. Eventide has become my second home and working here with residents has taught me patience and unconditional love.”

Cynthia said the worst part of the job is when a resident passes on. However, she tackles each day with a positive attitude, knowing that her work helps provide for her grandson.

Planning to retire in the next three years, Cynthia said she planned on relaxing at home. She thanked her fellow Eventide staff and management for being a blessing in her life, and accepted a long service award with pride.

Eventide Manager, Karen Glasgow, thanked Cynthia for her hard work: “I am very blessed to have such employees. I am thankful for all our loyal staff members and we are indeed blessed to have Cynthia with us.”
