Busy start to the year for Sarel Cilliers

A new addition to the Sarel family, Siyabonga Khumalo has made his way into the hearts of many.

Prefect leadership camp: On January 16, the Grade 12 prefects from Sarel Cilliers High School embarked on a wonderful and exciting journey. Drakensville Resort, in the foothills of Drakensberg, was the destination. The leadership camp was aimed at building trust and improving leadership skills, such as the ability to work as a collective unit and communication skills.

There were a range of indoor and outdoor activities, which helped learners to discover the power of their own potential. They learned how to plan, because proper planning prevents poor performance. The camp was absolutely enthralling and it boosted the group’s self-confidence.

Mayoral Awards: Sarel Cilliers and Endumeni awarded learners for their outstanding achievements in the 2019 matric examinations. The school presented learners with an honorarium, while Mayoral Awards (comprising of tablets and smart watches) were given at a special prize-giving ceremony at the Moth Hall.

Sarel Cilliers caters for special needs: A new addition to the Sarel family, Siyabonga Khumalo has made his way into the hearts of many. Although he is physically challenged, his spirit is as brave as a lion. Siyabonga is in Grade 10, is academically strong and can handle the challenges he faces. The school looks forward in helping Siyabonga reach his full potential.

Former head girl gives a powerful speech: Mhleli Mkhonza, a former head girl who matriculated in 2015, delivered a powerful and motivational speech to the learners. She explained the reality of the harsh world and motivated learners to work hard in order to succeed. She ended by reminding learners that they reap what they sow.

Science Expo winner: Last year, 12 learners from Sarel Cilliers made their way to Ladysmith for the first round of the Science Expo. They did exceptionally well and received the following medals:
Bronze – Taashlin Soobramoney, Phiwayinkosi Masala, Zanele Zwane, Thobeka Khoza and Sinothile Koali.
Silver – Andile Nkosi, Ayabonga Khumalo, Mphilenhle Zikalala, Omhle Mthetwa and Zinzi Khanya.

There were more than 600 learners from all over the world present. Mariam and Kameshnee received a silver medal for their project, a Sand Motor Generator.
