Inkamana claims national top 10 spot

The school boasts a total of 170 learners from all parts of rural KwaZulu-Natal

Top achiever at Inkamana High School, Wanele Mthetwa obtained seven distinctions during the National Senior Certificate examinations.

Wanele will pursue her studies in the medical field at the University of Cape Town.  This ‘mad soccer lover’, as she referred to herself, believes positivity is the key to success. Siyabonga Ngubane was the second placed achiever at the school with six A symbols.

Five learners obtained four As, another five obtained three As, six have two As and six obtained one A symbol.  75 per cent of the learners obtained an average above 60 per cent in all subjects.  This in itself places Inkamana in seventh place in the top ten schools in the country.

The school boasts a total of 170 learners from all parts of rural KwaZulu-Natal.  Inkamana promotes the importance of making a positive contribution to the world and developing each child’s potential to the fullest.

It boasts a very strong skills programme and believes this a critical part of child development before they enter the working world. School management also said book knowledge and academic achievements were not sufficient to take with you.

Outgoing Principal, Mrs I Steenkamp commented, “Children need to be taught skills to handle the challenges of daily life. Success is not a selfish act, and should be measured by making a difference in the world and in your fellow man’s life. It’s the little things, like listening to the news in classes every morning at 8am, which creates memorable moments in the learners’ lives.”

She is retiring after 22 years as as Inkamana’s Principal, and has handed over the reins to Irmhild Fourie, formerly the Deputy Principal.

Mrs Steenkamp wished Inkamana the best and extended her gratitude towards the stakeholders for their support over the years. She concluded by stating education was everybody’s responsibility and very important in South Africa.

And as one of the many slogans of the school reads – ‘Just do the next right thing’ – this is what Steenkamp plans for her future.
