The Youth Project Group Stars (YPG Stars) organisation, based in Estcourt, has been playing a significant role in the community, making a difference in the lives of victims of crime, helping youth and those who have been abused.

This organisation is willing to spread their work as they give opportunities to the youth. The group of volunteers believe in focusing on positive results for survivors of crime and abuse, and they aim to help the community grow stronger.  YPG Stars founder Mr Ndumiso Senzo Zondo (24) describes himself as a survivor.

“I always wanted to lend a helping hand. It disturbed me to see people suffering from domestic abuse and youth issues. I just want people to live normal lives and succeed in making their dreams a reality,” he said.

He never imagined doing this type of work, but he is thankful it is now his responsibility to go out and help those who cry for help.  His love and care for people is evident, and his family always advised him to become a social worker or doctor because of the passion they saw in him.

“I was offered to run YPG Stars to protect and promote the rights of victims in compliance with South Africa’s obligations under various international and regional human rights. The purpose is to ensure that the organisation, as the initial point of entry to the criminal justice system, provides an effective victim-friendly service in recognising and protecting their rights,” he said.

“However, seeing and hearing what happens to people and children can be very emotional.”

Ndumiso deals with the abuse of youth and children.

“The service we provide is a professional, accessible and sensitive service to the victims of crime and violence at the time of reporting the crime and during the investigation,” he added.

The YPG Stars programme has six volunteers.

“Every day is different. Some cases will be a man abused by his wife, but he does not feel comfortable talking about it. These men prefer female support. I am proud when I see them open up and speak out. If someone is afraid or has trust issues to talk about their problems, they can be referred to any volunteer they feel comfortable with. We are here for those in need and we are here to help,” said Mr Zondo.
