Traffic Department steps up visible patrols to ensure safer roads

"It should be noted that we are not there to punish road users but to ensure the safety of all."

A new and highly visible law enforcement system, comprising the Endumeni Traffic Department, SAPS and the Provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate, resulted in reportedly far better behaviour on the roads than in past years.

That is the view of the Endumeni Traffic Department’s Frik Coetsee.

“Thankfully, there were no fatal accidents within the Endumeni Municipal area over the Christmas/New Year period,” said Mr Coetsee, adding that 184 fines had been issued mainly for offences such as illegal parking and motorists not carrying their driver’s licenses. No incidents of drunken driving were recorded.

“We recorded 49 accidents – mostly fender benders – with just seven slight injuries. We believe our very visible approach curtailed radical road behaviour and we thank motorists for their co-operation. It should be noted that we are not there to punish road users but to ensure the safety of all.”

Mr Coetsee said law enforcement agencies had combined to man roadblocks, which he felt also gave the public the assurance that everything possible was being done to maintain law and order.
