Learning from day one as Endumeni schools re-open

There were few tears to be seen as most learners have grown used to being away from home.

Grade One learners in the greater Dundee area were part of the 2,8-million learners (23% of all learners in the country) who have enrolled at over 6 000 schooling facilities in the province today.

“As the province of KwaZulu-Natal, we are more than ready for an academic year which promises positive results at the end of the year. We are inspired by the last year’s matric results, which have shown a steady improvement from 66,4% in 2016 to 72,9% in 2017 to 76,2% in 2018 and a resounding 81,3% in 2019 – a remarkable improvement of 5,1% from 2018,” read a press released from the Office of KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala.

Learning and teaching went ahead at most schools in the area, with the little Grade Ones and Grade Rs busying themselves by colouring in pictures. There were few tears to be seen as most learners, having attended day care, have grown used to being away from home.

At Uelzen Primary School, traditional zuttertucken (sweets wrapped in paper shaped into a cone) were presented to the new Grade Ones by the Grade Two learners. This German tradition dates back to the 1800s.
