Storm rips through parts of Osizweni

'Relevant disaster teams were dispatched as soon as we heard about the damage caused by the severe storm.'

Houses in Osizweni Ward 8 were badly damaged last night (January 12), after strong winds and heavy rain ripped through some parts of the area.

Newcastle Municipality dispatched a team representing Disaster Management and Protection Services to the area shortly afterwards, to assist affected families. Chief Communications Officer at the municipality, Mlungisi Khumalo said five houses were affected:

“Relevant disaster teams were dispatched as soon as we heard about the damage that was caused by the severe storm last night. Interim relief such food parcels and mattresses have been offered to affected families, while we work forward and see how we will be able to further assist families. The Mayor is gravely concerned and has vowed to assist every family. He has sent words of encouragement and we are relieved no injuries were reported.”

Khumalo further stated the municipality would work closely with the Department of Social Development, to assist in the wake of the damaging storm.

“The Mayor will be further getting a full report from the Disaster Management team, and he will give feedback and ensure that everything goes back to its normality as soon as possible for the families affected.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
