A journalist reveals her most moving stories of 2019

These stories were tragic reminders of how fleeting life is, but also of how humanity thrives in adversity.

The year has gone by so fast, with so many tragedies and moving stories to report on in the community.

Journalist, Fathima Zubane speaks about which of the articles she covered over the past 12 months moved her most, and stay fresh in her memories:

3. Infuriated Sithembile residents protest outside court

Enraged residents of Sithembile marched from Sithembile Hall to the Glencoe Magistrate’s Court in November, carrying placards demanding ‘no bail’ and condemning gender-based violence. The protesters waited outside during court proceedings, while inside a suspect faced charges of killing teenager, Cebisile Buthelezi. Her body was found dismembered near Donald McHardy Dam after she was reported missing some days earlier.

2. Trio memorial service held at Dundee Secondary School

Family members, fellow learners and Dundee residents commemorated the lives of Thembeka Myeza (16), Asanda Buthelezi (16) and Nonjabulo Dludla (18), who were killed when the vehicle they were travelling overturned and burst into flames. In total five people died on that fateful trip back from a cultural event in Pomeroy in August. The tragedy brought into sharp focus again the safety issues surrounding public transport.

1. SASSA fraud swindles the needy out of their grants

Fraud centred on State Social Security services continued, with those most in need often left without their monthly grants. While some arrests were made in Vryheid, many were left penniless. Two such cases included that of Sizeni Mabizela (81), who is wheelchair-bound. Disabled Stephen Harris (52) was also stunned to find his grant had mysteriously disappeared from his account. Fortunately, kind-hearted readers stepped to help them both with groceries and other necessities.
