How to keep your pets safe over the New Year’s period

Cats and dogs hear a wider range of sounds, making the impact of the loud noises terrifying for them.

“We bet not even all the fireworks in the world could light up your life like animals do,” said the Newcastle SPCA.

As the festivities continue into the New Year, the safety of pets and animals should be a priority in every pet owners home, especially when it comes to fireworks. As fireworks are enjoyed year-round and over New Year’s by people all over the world, it can be seen as a source of fear for animals.

Cats and dogs are able to hear a wider range of sounds, as well as softer sounds than humans can, making the impact of the loud noises terrifying for them. This can cause loss of appetite, disorientation and even cause further harm to your pets.

As the number of pets which go missing from their homes increases over this period, the Newcastle Advertiser spoke to the Newcastle SPCA for guidelines and tips on how to keep your pets safe over the New Year period:

1. Politely ask neighbours to not light or throw firecrackers near your home.
2. Ensure all your pets are wearing collars so if they do stray, they will be able to be identified.
3. Try to manage the environment as much as possible, so the pet will be relaxed.
4. Food and water must be available at all times.
5. Alternatively, keep your pets inside where you can attempt to mask and muffle the sound of the fireworks.
6. Remember to place familiar and comforting items around them such as baskets and toys.
7. A good tip would also to make sure your pet has a good and hearty meal earlier in the evening. This will make them more likely to be sleepy and peaceful.
8. If your pet reacts badly to the loud noises, seek professional assistance from your veterinarian.
