SAPS and CPF festive crime operation gets underway

Newcastle SAPS encouraged residents to join the CPF and work together with law enforcement.

At the start of the festive season, Newcastle SAPS and Sector 1 CPF (Community Policing Forum) reflect on the year’s activities and prepare to take active measures to promote vigilance and crime prevention.

At a recent CPF meeting, the committee and Newcastle SAPS strategised and encouraged residents to join the CPF and work together with SAPS.

Addressing social ills:

Chairman of Sector 1 CPF, Rajesh Ramdaw read his report and elaborated on the social ills which plague the community.

“With the festive season approaching, stokvel crime is rife as criminals target vulnerable victims who they know carry large amounts of cash.”

Residents who are going on vacation are urged by SAPS to sign a vacant house register in order for SAPS to conduct patrols while they are away.

“We also ask the community not to leave household equipment or valuable items visible, as this could attract criminal activity,” added Ramdaw.

Chairman of Sector 4 and vice-chairman of the CPF mother body, Johan Pieters emphasised the success of a campaign rolled out in the sector called ‘Get to know your neighbour’.

“This campaign builds the community and in emergencies, neighbours can assist one another. Street committees are also encouraged for residents to stay vigilant,” said Pieters.

Crime reports:

Newcastle SAPS Acting Station Commander, Colonel Mike Nkosi read the crime statistics report and mentioned the four common crimes committed: common assault, assault grievous bodily harm (GBH), stock theft and theft out of motor vehicle.

“There was a decrease in crime overall as compared to last month. However, the CBD still remains a problem with high crime reports.

“We need to have a concerted effort to eradicate crime in our areas,” said Col Nkosi.

Strategies and tips from SAPS:

A campaign driven by the province has established a rapid response team, which consists of 10 members who are designated to decrease crime over the festive season.

This team will focus on business robbery and serial murders.
