Wellness Day gives residents another clean bill of health

"We would like to see more indigent people taking advantage of these services which are for free, as good health is true wealth."

On Sunday (December 15), the Ramakrishna Centre hosted a Wellness Day, with the aim of gifting health to the community of Newcastle. The event was held at the Ramakrishna Newcastle Sub Centre (Green Street Ashram).

“Our health is precious and should not be taken for granted. I initially started this programme with the aim of giving back to the community as much as possible, to make sure no one is left abandoned when it comes to the state of anyone’s health,” said CANSA volunteer, Mona Maharaj, who has been actively involved in the Wellness Days since 2002.

The Wellness Day offers a variety of healthcare services, from tests of blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol to vitamin B12 injections.

“We would like to see more indigent people taking advantage of these services which are for free, as good health is true wealth,” added Maharaj.

Part of the initiative was the presence of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), which encouraged the community to donate as often as they could.

“Blood is truly rare these days, and we try to educate the public on how crucial it is to donate. One pint of blood could possibly save a life; what better gift could there be?” asked a nurse from SANBS.

With the festive season here, Maharaj explained how important it was to be aware of one’s health and provided a few tips and guidelines on how to stay on track during the festivities:

1. Take full advantage of the free services provided on Wellness Days.
2. Check your vitals regularly.
3. Remember to stay hydrated and to exercise.
4. If you feel you are not at your best level of health, seek professional medical assistance and adjust your lifestyle.
