Health matters under the slide at district meeting

One of the important items noted in Shabangu's report was that executive management and sub district management posts had all been filled.

The MEC of Health in KwaZulu-Natal, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu held a Health Portfolio Committee Meeting with the KZN Legislature and the Umzinyathi Health District on Thursday.
At the meeting, Umzinyathi Health District Manager, Gugu Shabangu revealed the state of health services in the district.
One of the important items noted in Shabangu’s report was that executive management and sub district management posts had all been filled.

The MEC then explained the pending rationalisation of facilities within the department.
“The department is currently working on rationalisation as part of reducing costs and spending where there is a need to spend.

Cost-cutting measures make it difficult to run health facilities because of the non-exempted posts, and that is because only two categories are exempted: doctors and nurses. Nursing assistants, dentists, psychologists, cleaners, clerks and porters are not exempted, therefore nurses end up performing administrative duties and cleaning, which is not their duty. There is indeed staff shortage in the department.”
