One of the newest establishments in Vryheid, Great Bingo has extended a helping hand to AbaQulusi Municipality by lighting up the streets in town.
During a Council meeting last Thursday, chairperson of Great Bingo, Percy Shabalala presented the business’ plan to play a part in facelifting Vryheid, starting with the installation of LED lights and continuing with cleaning up the town.
“Great Bingo has been in operation for three months in Vryheid, and we have identified some of the challenges we are trying to assist the community and the Council with.
“We noted that lighting at night is not adequate and as you drive into town from Stretch Crescent, it does not inspire hope. It is very dark and becomes a triple threat, as criminal activities take place in the dark,” said Shabalala.

He said the installation of LEDs would be done according to specifications used by the municipality.
“We are looking at starting at Stretch Crescent, because that is where our business is situated, and we will take it upon ourselves to replace those lights should they fuse or malfunction. After that, we will then proceed to light up the town. In that way, we will be helping to decrease criminal activities in town.”
Shabalala further indicated this was not Great Bingo’s CSI project, but rather a way to help rebuild the town.
“For our CSI projects, we must be approved by the Gambling Board in order for us to get funding. This is coming straight from Great Bingo. Vryheid is slowly dying through something which can be dealt with by a flip of a coin.
“The town is untidy, it’s dirty. We must teach the community about cleanliness. As Great Bingo, we have already started with clean-up campaign in town and we will continue doing it. We would like to motivate other businesses to also extend their hand, to assist in rebuilding this dying town. Let’s fix the problem and forget who made a mistake,” concluded Shabalala.
His offer was applauded by the Deputy Mayor of Zululand District Municipality and councillors, after which the proposal was adopted and approved.

Great Bingo chairperson, Percy Shabalala calls on other businesses to join hands in rebuilding Vryheid.
