315 sexual offenders brought to book and 14 life sentences secured

The suspects were arrested for various crimes, including rape, sexual assault, kidnapping, child neglect, child pornography, attempted rape and assault

Detectives from Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences (FCS) units across KwaZulu-Natal achieved excellent results during November, following investigations into numerous cases of sexual offences and domestic violence.

Detectives across the province were in and out of courts to ensure that justice was delivered to victims of crime who were sexually violated and attacked. From November 1 to 30, 315 suspects were arrested for various crimes, including rape, sexual assault, kidnapping, child neglect, child pornography, attempted rape and assault.

A total of 14 life sentences, as well as 197 years’ imprisonment, was handed down to 35 persons who were accused and convicted of rape and sexual assault.

“This news is most welcome, especially as we observe the 16 Days of Activism. Our work is not done and we will continue to ensure that those accused of gender-based violence are put behind bars where they belong. Their names will also be included in the Sexual Offenders Register. We hope that these sentences will bring closure to the victims,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
