Wheelchair donations brings hope to rural residents

ArcelorMittal and Rotary Majuba went off the beaten track to reach people deeply in need of help.

Deep in the rural areas of Lister Farm, Soul City and Jobstown, the lives of a few residents were forever changed.

As the ArcelorMittal Foundation and Rotary Majuba (Newcastle) continued its wheelchair distribution project, Gogo G. P. Buthelezi wept uncontrollably.

“Gogo Buthelezi (68) has spent all her time indoors, confined to a thin mattress on the floor of her home. When she was put into the wheelchair, she wept. Now, she is finally back in charge of the household,” said Joe Nowbath, Manager of Socio-economic Development and Transformation at ArcelorMittal South Africa.

Kabelo Twala, who resides in Jobstown, received the next donation.

“This gentleman, who is now 30 years old, last had a wheelchair when he was a youngster. He could not contain his joy as he received this wheelchair, and said he can now visit the neighbours and spend time outdoors.”

Kabelo Twala says he can finally visit the neighbours and spend time outdoors.

The third visit, continued Nowbath, was to Nontokozo Msimango (20), who was also shaking with joy.

“Sadly, Nonthoko suffers with cerebral palsy and the chair will enable her family to take her to the clinics,” said Nowbath. “ArcelorMittal and Rotary Majuba went off the beaten track to reach people deeply in need of help, and will continue our pursuit of changing the lives of people desperate for our assistance,” he concluded.
