Is Newcastle off the hook with Eskom?

Eskom and the Newcastle Municipality have agreed it is in everyone's best interest to reach a settlement.

As if power cuts for the first time in load-shedding history were not enough, Eskom is arguing in court as to why Newcastle should be switched off for more than R200-million debt.

Investigative reporter, Estella Naicker and Newcastle Advertiser journalist, Zaria van Dillen are currently in court. Here is what has happened today so far:

Newcastle Municipality’s legal representative, Advocate Joseph Nxusani looks up from an intense discussion with fellow attorneys.

Eskom and the Newcastle Municipality have agreed it is in everyone’s best interest to reach a settlement. While the details are still being ironed out, it seems the parties have agreed to a court order compelling Newcastle Municipality to pay its current account.

Attorneys have been in lengthy discussions since this morning:

“While we are given to understand there were some arguments as to who should bear the costs, and how CoGTA’s involvement should be added as an order of the court, it seems the parties are getting closer to a resolution. The outstanding debt is likely to be discussed between Eskom and the Newcastle Municipality at a later stage,” said Naicker.

“Nothing has been finalised yet. Court proceedings will begin at 2pm, when we believe the agreed settlement will me made an order of the court.”
