Constant rain breaks drought’s grip – for now

In December so far, nearly 86mm of rain has been recorded in some areas.

The good rains which have fallen over the past few weeks appear to have broken the grip the drought had on the area, following months of dryness.

Over 154 millimetres of rain were recorded in November in the Dundee district, compared to the long-term average of 109mm. In December so far, nearly 86mm has been recorded in some areas.

The rain has boosted the level of the Buffalo River, which in October had stopped flowing. However, the Umzinyathi District Municipality has warned the inability of the Biggarsberg Water Treatment Plant to cope with increased demand for water has meant ‘water-shedding’ will continue for the immediate future.

uThukela Water, which is responsible for the bulk supply of water in Umzinyathi, has previously warned the Water Treatment Plant needed to be upgraded but did not have the funds to carry out such a project.

On Sunday, Josef Martin of Hattingspruit recorded a dramatic video during his flight over the Buffalo River, a few kilometres upstream from its confluence with the mighty Tugela River.
