Spay your dogs and put an end to illegal breeding in Ladysmith

If you are unable to afford the costs of spaying your dog, you should consider making use of the services of the State Vet in Pieters

A frightening new trend seems to be on the rise in town and that is ‘illegal breeding’.

According to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL), pet owners allow their female dogs to have litter after litter of puppies in the hope of selling the pups to make quick cash.

This is highly illegal, as the municipal bylaw states you may not keep an un-spayed female within municipal boundaries, except in the case of a registered breeder.

What is spaying?

Spaying is the practice of sterilizing female animals by removing the reproductive organs, including the ovaries and uterus. Spaying typically occurs between four and six months old, but can happen for older pets as well, as long as they are in good health.

The benefits of spaying your dog include: helping to prevent unwanted litters and preventing your female dog from having many serious health problems, such as uterine infections and breast cancer.

If you are unable to afford the costs of spaying your dog, the league says you should consider making use of the services of the State Vet in Pieters.

“Go to your local vet and spay your animals, as this will prevent the ongoing problem of homeless cats and dogs roaming the streets,” urges Annamarie Koen of the AACL.
