New chapter begins for the Newcastle Library

"As the library is a Government institution, we are delighted at the fact that it is finally open and can be made use of by the public."

In what has been described by a local councillor as ‘an early Christmas present’, the Newcastle Library is finally open to the public.

The long anticipated wait, which has been two years in the making, finally came to an end this week.

The Newcastle Advertiser visited the library this week, and can report that residents can now expect a fully functional and brand new facility.

The doors of the Newcastle Library have been closed since before January 2018. Developments at the facility have finally progressed, with the doors to the facility re-opened to the public on December 2.

“We have been fighting for this library for over two years now, and I am glad to have been made aware that the facility is finally ready and is here for the community’s benefit. This is truly an early Christmas present,” said Ward Councillor, Bertie Meiring, who has been actively involved in tracking the library’s progress since it was closed at the end of 2017.

The recent opening was confirmed to be an operational one however, meaning the library is open to the public. The official opening will be held early next year.

“As the library is a Government institution, we are delighted at the fact that it is finally open and can be made use of by the public. There is more exciting news on the horizon; the facility offers state of the art IT infrastructure that will provide aid for those in search of specific text books and information. The Internet connection is as fast as ever. We predict only good things to come in the future for the town’s library,” stated Bheki Nkosi, the Strategic Executive Director for Community Services.
