Municipality schedules meetings to ‘encourage public participation’

''Public participation is crucial to ensure everyone is involved in municipal affairs," says Speaker, Lucky Khumalo.

Lack of public participation in the Integrated Development Programme (IDP) Roadshow has prompted the Endumeni Council to schedule two more public meetings.

For Ward 2, the Dundee Residents’ Association is invited to the Endumeni Council Chamber from 4pm on December 11. For Glencoe, a Residents’ Association meeting will be held at the Glencoe Library from 4pm on December 12.

The IDP Roadshows give the public an opportunity to interact with Councillors over what projects should be given priority.

Last week’s IDP meeting at the Moth Hall was poor attended. By 4pm when the meeting was due to start, the only people present were municipal officials, Thulani Mahaye (Ward Councillor), Anthon Raubenheimer (Councillor), Mathula Nkosi (Deputy Mayor), Council Speaker, Lucky Khumalo, and one other man. Mayor, Sduduzo Mdluli, arrived a little later.

By 4.40pm, another 20 people had arrived, but Speaker Khumalo said this was not simply good enough and declared the meeting would have to be postponed.

“We cannot ventilate on important issues to just a handful of residents,” he said.

Cllr Mahaye commented Ward 2 was the ‘economic powerhouse of Endumeni’ and stated it was important to ‘discuss developmental issues with as many people as possible’. By 5pm, the meeting was officially postponed.
