Farmer strikes back at attackers

On his way to the door to investigate, he was attacked by the two men

Last Thursday night, a relaxed summer’s evening turned into a nightmare for a 61-year-old farmer from the Scheepersnek area.
He was shot once during an attack by two men.
According to sources, at about 8pm on the night the farmer was alerted to so-called suspicious movements outside the farmhouse by dogs.
On his way to the door to investigate, he was attacked by the two men, who reportedly gained entry through the open patio door.
Both of the men were armed, one with a gun and the other with blunt object, which was used to strike the farmer over the head.
The farmer fought back however and managed to overpower one of the attackers, and while trying to defend against the second attacker, was shot in the left arm.
This prompted the attacker to flee the house, while the first attacker used the distraction to crawl away.
It is believed the men only managed to take a wallet and car keys.
The farmer then retrieved his gun from the safe to protect himself, in case the attackers returned.
He alerted his neighbours, who immediately closed off all the roads in the area.
However, the attackers were on foot and managed to evade capture and avoided the roadblocks.
One source stated the farmer was very strong emotionally and was ‘fit as a fiddle after the attack’.
SAPS officials said the matter was under investigation.
