Cancer support group reflects on 2019

A call for more survivors to attend support group meetings

The poor attendance at support group meetings was again emphasised on Saturday when 11 people attended a cancer support group meeting at St Mathew’s Anglican Church hall.

Chairperson and community volunteer Ramika Peerbhay said that while every effort is made – via SMSs, WhatsApp messages and word of mouth – to invite more people, some just ‘bailed out’ at the last minute.

Sherilyn Mackenzie gives a presentation on the products she sells.

“We know there are over 30 cancer survivors in Estcourt. As a support group, we don’t know who is suffering and in pain; we don’t even know who we will see next year. That is why we meet four times a year to see each other and share,” she added.

Nevertheless, the meeting continued with reflection on the past year, with members saying that the meetings have been informative and inspiring.

Sherilyn Mackenzie, a representative from Watkins Valeur, gave a short presentation on products that assist with pain, influenza and skin conditions, before handing out gift bags to everyone present.

Thereafter, a few laughs were heard as a fun game was played and a lucky draw held. In conclusion, members agreed that they would like to continue the support group meetings next year, with an added effort to place posters in strategic places to get more people to join in.

Mrs Peerbhay reminded everyone present that the support group is not for cancer survivors only and is open to survivors of any accident or illness.
