A man identified as Ntando Amos Sithole (27) was found near the bridge leading from Colita into the suburb known as Qonties on November 10.

Then, when Transnet officials reported for duty on November 14, they made a chilling discovery of two bodies in a pipeline fuel bunker along the R103.

It is unclear how long the bodies had been there for. Pietermaritzburg Search & Rescue, the K9 Unit and Bomb Disposal Squad were called to the scene. A crane had to be used to remove a huge concrete slab so the rescue team could gain access to the bunker.

It is alleged that the two deceased (both males) were attempting to steal fuel from the underground pipe when they succumbed to the fumes in the bunker.

The bodies had to be hoisted out of the bunker with the crane, after which they were handed over to police. The men have still not been identified.

“Both deceased were taken to the Estcourt government mortuary and both have not been identified by relatives,” commented police spokesperson Captain Bongani Ephraim Nyathi.

An inquest docket has since been filed at Estcourt police station.
