Mr Buckus died on Sunday afternoon due to natural causes. Tributes have since poured in on social media platforms as locals recall the 77-year-old fondly during happier times.

Those who have crossed paths with Mr Ally Buckus will recall him for his striking tall stature and long white mustache. For many others, Mr Ally Buckus was a respected man who cared deeply about public service.

He was not only a resident of Forderville and businessman, but also a former Umtshezi Local Municipality councillor for a term of five years and served on the Water Crisis Committee.

“Breen was a very straightforward man, who was not very easily influenced. He always had the best intentions for Estcourt,” said Edith Lite with great sadness.

Mrs Lite worked alongside Breen as a fellow councillor during his term of office and also served with him on the Water Crisis Committee.

Friend and colleague Tim Jeebodh took to Facebook, saying this: “It is with a heavy heart that the community of Estcourt says goodbye to a simple leader. As a human being, we are prone to success and failures in life. Breen was no different. But his contribution to society will never be forgotten. He was never afraid to tackle issues head on. As a devout Muslim, he attended all prayers, funerals and weddings, be it Muslim, Christian, Hindu or Traditional. He was a human of all seasons. Never the general, but he led from the front. Your race is done, pass the baton of life and enter the next phase of life in Heaven.”

Mr Ally Buckus was laid to rest on Monday (November 11).
