Crime escalating in Estcourt

Police warn that there has been a spike in crime, especially in the central business district

Police are appealing to locals to be vigilant; as opportunistic criminals are swooping in. This comes in the wake of a successful vehicle recovery operation where several police officers were instrumental in recovering a business minibus that was stolen.

While patrolling the N3, police officers spotted the stolen vehicle and gave chase. Soon other police units joined in and the suspects abandoned the minibus, making their getaway in a VW Polo.

“No one has been arrested in connection with this incident and Estcourt police are investigating a case of theft,” said police spokesperson Captain Bongani Nyathi.

Residents are urged to be aware of theft and bag snatching in the central business district (CBD).

“Most of these crimes are committed when an unsuspecting person is offloading groceries. The criminals snatch their bags and run away,” explained Captain Nyathi.

Police have also seen a spike in stock theft.

“Stock owners are requested to ensure that they check on their livestock on a daily basis and that a herdsman is with the animals,” said the captain.

Residents are also reminded to be alert when using automatic teller machines (ATMs).

“Criminals are moving around in the area; looking for victims. Do not accept help from unknown people when using an ATM. The public is also warned against picking up money that is lying on the ground, especially when they have just withdrawn cash. Criminals take them to a secluded area and rob them of all their money,” commented Captain Nyathi.
