Classrooms swept away by heavy rains in Ladysmith

Parents say that the buildings still standing could fall at any time

Classrooms were washed away recently at Sidingulwazi Primary School in Tsakane as heavy rains hammered the area. Parents protested outside the school on Monday morning (November 11), demanding that the proper repairs be carried out at the school.

Many of the classrooms are made of corrugated iron sheeting and were completely blown away in the storm.

Parents say that the school was built in 2009 and in the 10 years that have followed, nothing has been done to improve the structure of the school. They are of the opinion that the school is unsafe for the children.

Parents add that the other buildings still standing could fall at any time.

Answers are now being demanded from the Department of Education.

“The school’s condition is so bad now that if another major storm hits the area, there won’t be anything left at all,” exclaimed one concerned parent.

The KZN Department of Education was approached for comment, but none has been received as yet.

Members of the department did, however, visit the school on Monday afternoon and told the parents that two containers will be delivered to the school so that the children can complete their exams.
