The rains fall, the taps run dry..

The outage comes after soaking rains help break the drought...

Dundee and Glencoe are continuing to experience water cuts following an outage at the Tayside pump station.

A unit was struck by lightning which severely compromised the ability of the  pump station to extract water from the Buffalo River.

Endumeni receives 80% of its  water supply from the river for purification. Mandisa Mbuyisa, of Umzinyathi District Municipality’s communication department, said the local dams can ”only give us 2.5 ml whereas our demand is at 11 ml.”

“Water tankers cannot assist as this will drain the little water available. Water shedding will continue and alternate between Dundee and Glencoe to boost the reservoir in Glencoe until the PLC unit is fixed. Water will be release from 4am to 10am and again at  4pm to 9pm.”

“The PLC unit has been ordered and will hope to have the pump station up and running as soon as. We are urging all our customers to use water sparingly.”

Irate residents have turned to social media to express their outrage over the water cuts and are also not impressed by the fact that the lower lying areas of the towns receive water via gravity feed while the higher lying areas go without.

The water shedding comes after over 105mm of rain was measured in some parts of Dundee since Sunday helping the area to recover from drought conditions.

Dannhauser and Durnacol have also experienced widespread water outages after a fault at a pump station that has since been repaired.
