“This protest is not about any municipal issues but is politically related"

Speaking to the Estcourt News this morning about the disruption at Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize has labelled it as ‘politically motivated’.

Since yesterday morning, the municipal building has remained closed after tyres were burnt and rubbish scattered in front of the premises.

Tyres set alight just outside the municipal building in Victoria Street.

Mr Mkhize explained that he received a call yesterday (November 11) at about 5am, informing him that tyres were ablaze at the municipality.

“I contacted the police, who were aware. Upon my arrival I discovered that all entrances to the municipal offices were locked,” he explained.

Mr Mkhize went on further to distance himself from the protest action.

“This protest is not about any municipal issues but is politically related. I am not a politician, I am an official, therefore this is beyond my scope but I have however contacted the parties to inform them that my office is open for the union to discuss any labour issues,” he said.

The municipality remains closed today.
