Four people drowned in the Ngagane River yesterday (November 7).
Madadeni SAPS members were dispatched to the scene near the old Iskor Bridge, where it is alleged a traditional healer was performing rituals. Four people were in the river when they encountered difficulty returning to the shore.
“The traditional healer survived and was taken to Madadeni Hospital for treatment. Police divers from Ladysmith were called and three bodies were recovered during the search,” said SAPS Community Liaison Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube.
Officials from the LCRC, EMS, Newcastle K9 Unit and divers later recovered the fourth body.
“The bodies were handed over to members of the [Department of Health] and an inquest was opened at Madadeni SAPS for investigation,” concluded Capt Ncube.
