Museum adds historic wagon and tools to its collection

With help from Aviemore Colliery and Buffalo Coal, Pam and her museum staff went to Ladysmith to pick up the wagon.

Talana Museum has again added to its trove of historic treasures.

A wagon, thought to be over 130 years ago, was transported from Ladysmith to Talana recently. A selection of quaint and possibly valuable blacksmith tools have also been taken as historic exhibits.

Curator of Talana Museum, Pam McFadden explained that when she heard that the Ladysmith Historical Society was no longer able to keep the exhibition at the Old Toll House, she jumped at the opportunity to the collect valuable pieces of history.

With help from Aviemore Colliery and Buffalo Coal – which supplied a truck and artisans – Pam and her museum staff went to Ladysmith to pick up the wagon, which had previously been used on a farm at Verkykerskop near Memel.

“According to papers, the wagon was last used on the road in the 1960s and will be a must-see item at Talana.”

The old blacksmith’s equipment is of special significance, she added. These were the tools used by Mr Singh of Wasbank, who was the last known commercial blacksmith in the province. When he died some years ago, his equipment was bought by the Ladysmith Historical Society.

“We are pleased that Mr Singh’s tools of the trade are back in our area.”

Despite windy and hot conditions, Pam and her team managed to safely transport the wagon and tools back to Talana.

“Many thanks to all those who helped. People in Dundee are always willing to go the extra mile for the museum, which we really appreciate.”
