Workers from the Umzinyathi District Municipality are at the scene of a major sewage leak, in a field off Smith Street.
Residents in the area said a pond of effluent formed in a field, near the cattle pound, after a sewer pipe apparently started leaking. FC Bester of the Endumeni Residents Association said he had received complaints and called the District Municipality this morning.
“Our worry is that the effluent runs into the Steenkoolspruit, which is a tributary of the Buffalo River and from where Endumeni and Nquthu extract potable water for household consumption. The resultant pollution could have a major impact on water quality,” said Mr Bester.
He confirmed workmen had reacted to his call, and were taking steps to stem the effluent leak.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
