Unrest at Estcourt taxi rank

Tensions flared at the taxi rank recently

Traffic came to a brief standstill at the taxi rank in Alexandra Street last Tuesday.  Burning tyres and overturned bins could be seen in Phillip Street.

Police and traffic officers closed off the road while the fire simmered and left an acrid smoky haze inside the rank.

Smouldering tyres lie at the Phillip Street entrance to the taxi rank.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, it is speculated that this action was as a result of dozens of taxis being impounded by a provincial policing unit on October 12.

The source said that the act of burning tyres and trashing the bins could be an act of defiance from the taxi drivers.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed that about 50 taxis were impounded during the operation.

“The aim of the operation was to eliminate the use of vehicles which are utilised as unauthorised taxis,” he said, but gave no further details about the operation.
