Dozens of guests, both local and visitors, converged on the Swami Sahajananda Community Centre on Sunday for this annual event that is hosted by the Estcourt Hindu Cultural Society (EHCS).

Music from Oriental Sangeeth welcomed the guests as they settled down to enjoy the programme.  Members of the Estcourt Senior Citizens Club signalled the official start of the function by walking down the aisle with lamps, a true symbol of Diwali – the Festival of Lights.

Pranitha Ramlal welcomed everyone and gave a brief explanation about the significance of Diwali, which was described as “light dispelling the darkness of ignorance”.

“The purpose of Diwali is to glorify the light of God,” said Mrs Ramlal.

EHCS president Sudarshan Bandu delivered his message, reminding the audience of the auspiciousness of Diwali, which is celebrated worldwide.

He encouraged all present to let light live in their lives.  The youth of the Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa – Estcourt Satsang Group took to the stage amid cheers and presented a mesmerizing dance.

The Oriental Sangeeth Band had the audience clapping to their beat as they entertained with old favourites, movie songs, as well as bhajans.

Lohitaksha Ramsai also had an appreciative audience during her solo dance items.  The programme concluded with a prayer and supper.
