How can parents help their child during exam time?

A good atmosphere and comfortable studying space can lead to productive learning

Not only are learners themselves anxious about their matric exams, many parents share the same feeling. But how can parents get involved in helping their child with their exam preparations?

Here are a few tips on how parents can help their child:

* Create a great learning environment: A good atmosphere and comfortable studying space can lead to productive learning and revision. Ensure that your child has what they need to thrive, whether it’s sufficient light and quiet, or a comfortable chair and the necessary stationery.

* Spread out revision: It’s difficult for anyone to concentrate on learning for long periods of time, so ensure that your child is taking short breaks.

* Support them: Studying is not always fun or easy, so praise your children when they are working hard. Encourage rather than threaten, as kids don’t need more stress during exam time.

* Provide positive, encouraging, ‘can-do’ messages.

*Ensure that they’re sleeping sufficiently: Sleep is important to not only give children mental and physical rest, but to consolidate what’s been learnt during the day.

* Avoid getting into conflict. Conflict with someone as influential as a parent about what to do after matric can prevent your child from getting on the path to success that is right for them.

All the best for the exams!
