Residents warned to brace themselves for water cuts

Umzinyathi District Municipality has reintroduced 'water shedding', in a bid to conserve dwindling resources.

The mini heatwave, a late start to the rainy season and load-shedding have all contributed to water resources being under severe pressure.

Evaporation levels are expected to rocket today as the mercury races up to a predicted 38 degrees in the Dundee area. Residents will also have to brace themselves for more water cuts.

Umzinyathi District Municipality this week announced the re-introduction of ‘water shedding’, in a bid to conserve dwindling resources. Lower lying areas will still receive some supply due to gravity feed.

Umzinyathi has made no mention of banning car washing, but previously washing vehicles with hosepipes was not permitted.

“Water pressure will be reduced from 9pm to 4am daily and re-opened from 4am to 10am. There will be further reductions in pressure from 4pm to 9pm. It should be noted that no watering of gardens or filling of pools will be allowed until the situation improves,” said Nomonde Nzimakwe, Umzinyathi District Municipality’s Communications Officer.

Eskom’s load-shedding is also said to be affecting the Tayside water supply volumes from the Buffalo River.
