Survivor says cancer is not a death sentence

October is Breast Cancer awareness month! Carmen tells her story....

Joyce Meyer once said, “Being negative only makes a difficult journey more difficult. You may be given a cactus, but you don’t have to sit on it.”
Despite being diagnosed with breast cancer, Carmen Combrinck lives each day in full.
In May 2018, she felt a lump in her breast.
By June she received the news from doctors, letting her know it was Stage 3 cancer (an aggressive form).
In July, Carmen underwent a mastectomy of one breast.
11 out of 15 of her lymph nodes were cancerous, so during August, she started chemotherapy and radiation treatments in Richards Bay.
Carmen will be on hormone therapy (Tamoxifen) for the rest of her life, with doctors’ check-ups every three months.
However, the cancer could come back at any stage.
Entering menopause and high levels of estrogen in the body can be possible causes of this aggressive type of cancer.
“Cancer is a mind game. You have to play it everyday and win, or you lose yourself,” said Carmen, who considers herself a positive person.
