Paula has been training with Amy since the age of 12 and said without her support, she would definitely not be where she is today.

Local swimmer, Paula van Zyl brought home the gold at the KZN Sport Awards, hosted on Saturday (October 12).
Paula was among 12 nominees in the category Sport Personality of the Year 2019.

She was awarded the title of KZN Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability at the prestigious awards function and said she was speechless, over the moon and full of excitement for the future.

The young talented swimmer can be found training religiously at the local Newcastle Swimming pool with her coach, Amy Fraser.

Paula has been training with Amy since the age of 12 and said without her support, she would definitely not be where she is today.

She went on to say her family also played a big role in supporting her endeavours as an upcoming sports star.

Paula is a local and attends school at St Dominics Newcastle and is also very much active on other sport scenes such as hockey. She has a very vibrant social life and enjoys spending time with family and friends as often as she can.

Paula said when she is not in the pool, she enjoyed a little down time from training four times a week in the pool and spending at least two hours in the gym daily to keep herself in prime health.

“You have to stick through the tough times, no matter what,’’ stated Paula.

When asked if she had any advice for the community, particularly upcoming swimmers, Paula said it was very important to stand up for oneself and to always be passionate.

Looking to the future, Paula intends to further her studies as a occupational therapist and said her swimming career has played a crucial part in realising her dreams.

She also intended to chase her biggest dream yet – to qualify for the Paralympic Games.

Congratulations, Paula – the Newcastle Advertiser is proud of you!
