Utrecht collision leaves one dead and entrance destroyed

It is alleged two cars were racing, when the driver of one of the vehicles lost control and crashed into the guardhouse.

Last Wednesday night, the entrance to the town of Utrecht was a scene of utter tragedy.

It is alleged two cars were racing, when the driver of one of the vehicles lost control and crashed into the guardhouse.

The force of the impact caused the vehicle to catch alight, with flames subsequently spreading to the building, the thatched lapa once adorning the entrance to the town and the sign which proclaimed ‘town within a game park’.

Gone is the facade usually welcoming commuters between Vryheid and Newcastle along the R34.

It was reported that despite the assistance of bystanders, who pulled the driver through the back window of the burning vehicle to get him to safety, he died shortly after the collision.

At the time of going to print, Utrecht SAPS was unable to provide further details of the incident.
