Majuba TVET College hosts provincial WSSA

The WSSA KZN Subcommittee discussed how skills can be improved and implemented in learners at TVET colleges.

Majuba TVET College hosted the KZN Subcommittee for a World Skills South Africa (WSSA) programme, on October 9 at Blackrock Casino. The delegation went about discussing new plans and improvements for the coming year.

Representing the Department of Higher Education And Training (DHET) in KwaZulu-Natal, Miss Mngomezulu said the department supported the colleges in such programmes:

“As TVET colleges, we are at the forefront of skills, and it is our job to train and guide young people in acquiring skills and we need to do this aggressively. So we are here to celebrate all achievements so far, and we further to need to position ourselves so we are not left behind, especially now in the fourth industrial revolution. As a region, we fully pledge our support and we recognise all contributions made by the colleges, especially the staff who work so hard to achieve good work.”

Training Manager at ArcelorMittal, Vinesh Singh emphasised the importance of development involved in World Skills:

“World Skills shows how important skills, education and training is for youth, industries and society, by challenging young professionals around the world to become the best in the skill of their choice. WSSA is the collective voice for skills excellence and development in vocational, technological and service oriented careers around the globe. Industry has to be part of this process because our sustainability and future depends on an effective skills training system. Today, World Skills represents more than 45 skills in over 75 member countries and regions, all working together with the youth, educators and the industries to help prepare the workforce and talent of today for the jobs of the future.”

Majuba TVET College CFO, Mrs D Hassim, said it’s important for senior management in colleges to be supportive:

“I have a simple analogy for what WSSA is. It is our contribution to the development of the learners supported by the TVET system. It is the opportunity for a kid from rural Madadeni or Osizweni in NKZN, to showcase his or her skills on a national or even international platform. That alone is priceless. As a Senior Manager, regardless of the portfolio one may hold, the success of our learners is the cornerstone of our success as a college, that is why Senior Management’s support in an undertaking of this nature is not only required, but is a critical success factor. One may ask what is the return on investment in relation to this project? What do we get out of it as a college? Aside from the amazing opportunities our learners receive, our lecturers are also exposed to international standards with regards to artisan development, teaching and learning; and it’s best to practice amongst ourselves within South Africa first,” she concluded.
