Fatal crash destroys tourism structure in Utrecht

"The municipality has lodged an insurance claim for the damages to the structure, after vehicle the structure and burst into flames."

On October 9, a car crashed into the town’s welcome sign on Voor Street in Emadlangeni (Utrecht).

The vehicle proceeded to crash into the building’s structure, which serves as a guardhouse, as confirmed by Newcastle SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube:

“We can confirm an Opel car crashed at the site and burst into flames. The structure was set alight, with the welcome sign also being hit. The driver of the vehicle was unfortunately fatally wounded on the scene and a case of culpable homicide is currently being investigated at the Utrecht SAPS.”

Emadlangeni Municipality’s Head of Communications, Ayanda Mabaso said the municipality was taking steps to fix the damages.

“The municipality has lodged an insurance claim for the damages to the structure, which was caused by a fire after a car hit the structure and burst into flames. We currently await the outcome of the claim lodged with the insurance company. Once the insurance claim has been processed and the outcome received, the municipality will then attend to the reconstruction and repair of the structure. [A case] has been opened at the local police station, and investigations have commenced. There is no specific time frame as yet as to when the structure will be up again, as we wait for the insurance company to finish their procedures, which will then determine the longevity of the process,” he concluded.
