WATCH: Sewage issues are threatening Newcastle’s environment

Taxi drivers at the Newcastle taxi rank said they had to bear the stench each day of their working lives.

Sewage blockages and water pollution have become a worrying factor in Newcastle, as sewage reportedly runs into the Ncandu River.

Newcastle resident and former councillor, Hannes Liebenberg expressed his views on how sewage has contaminated the river running behind the CBD’s taxi rank, during an in situ visit last week.

Liebenberg further explained the dire state of the river where it ran beneath the bridge at Trim Park. In response, municipal Head of Communications, Dr Dumisani Thabethe said residents needed to change their behaviour and mindset in taking care of their environment.
