WATCH: Councillor applauded for cleaning up town’s clutter

This prompted Councillor Bertie Meiring and his team to hire the use of two trailers and collect the refuse in their own capacity.

When municipal workers went on strike after being denied overtime pay, refuse collection services were halted.

In the interim, residents were urged by the municipality to drop off their rubbish at the Newcastle Show Grounds, where a municipality skip was stationed. Enraged residents took to social media and voiced their concerns.

Some said it was unfair to hinder services, which are paid for by the residents every month. This prompted Ward Councillor, Bertie Meiring and his team to hire the use of two trailers and collect the refuse in their own capacity.

On Thursday, (October 10) Cllr Meiring and his team were seen in Ward 4 which includes Pioneer Park, Amiel Park and Hutten Heights and surrounding areas, picking up and loading black refuse bags to dump at the Newcastle Show Grounds.

A media inquiry has been sent to the municipality to answer questions pertaining to collection of refuse, as it is unclear when services will resume.

What are your thoughts on the issue? How are you assisting to alleviate the problem?
